Auto Transport Quote Services is one of the best car transporters in the United States, but we are only a spec of dust compared to Google as a company. Google is one of the largest tech companies in the world. It is the largest search engine in the world, it has the Android cellphone and tablet market, Chrome internet browser, and they are now testing their self-driving car on US roads. We have transported many cars across the country, but we have never seen anything like this Google Pod Car. This car has technology in it that other auto makers wish they could nail down before Google does.
The new pod, no it is not a vehicle we would transport enclosed, is a car that looks like a smart car with a black top. The top is actually hiding all of the sensors it uses for self-driving capabilities. This new version of the Google Car is a two seater that actually has no steering wheel and not gas pedal. When it says self-driving it truly means self-driving. This vehicle was built from the ground up with the intent to only be a self-driving vehicle, so why need the gas pedal and steering wheel? This version travels less than 25 mph and is not designed for any long trips. The battery can only get 80 miles to a charge, currently. The vehicle can only drive in places that has been mapped by Google Maps. The sensors that are being “hid” when the black roof are taking care of the driving, braking, recognizing road hazards such as rain or snow so there is literally no human interaction. Also, this is not a street legal car because it doesn’t have the Federally mandated safety features such as air bags. The Google Car works great for testing though, which is exactly what they plan on doing starting this summer.
Certain States, such as California, require a steering wheel, gas pedal and brakes because it is has regulations that require the driver to be able to take back the control of the wheel at any time. This means the final version of the Google Car may come with those features, but Google is lobbying hard to get the regulations changed.
Google is trying to keep the world a safer place by eliminating human error while driving which accounts for 1.2 million road deaths a year. With self-driving vehicles that number will go down dramatically and road traffic would also be lessened. Another key feature would be that elderly and disabled people would be able to get around more easily because the car can drive them around.
The Google Car may never happen, however. Google is not looking to get into the car industry, but simply create the technology that will be adopted by auto makers. This could be a HUGE misstep by Google because nearly ever auto maker is creating their own version of the self-driving car, but Google will have the tech available long before any auto maker is completed.
The Google Car fleet has been in accidents in the past, but Google likes to point out that not a single one of the accidents were the Cars fault while in self-driving mode. One of the accidents the person driving the Pod Car manually was the reason it got into the accident. The other 10 accidents the fleet has been in while testing for 6 years were all the fault of the other driver. That is quite impressive. How is the public going to feel not being in control of the vehicle? Only time will tell on that one.
